Overview

WordPress is an open source publishing platform for building websites, blogs and apps. Sites are assembled from blocks in an editor that previews changes in real time, starting from a theme or a blank canvas, and extended with plugins for stores, analytics, newsletters and social integration. Version 7.0 adds AI provider connections, reusable patterns and visual revision history.

Strengths and trade-offs

Strengths

  • Open source, downloaded and run on hosting you choose
  • Block editor builds and rearranges pages with no code needed
  • Extensive plugin library adds stores, analytics and newsletters
  • Live preview while editing plus visual revision history

Trade-offs

  • You must find hosting and install the platform yourself
  • Much of the functionality comes from plugins, not the core
  • No pricing, support terms or hosting costs shown on the site
  • Releases move quickly: 7.0 is out and 7.1 is already in beta
