Overview

TiDB Cloud Starter is a fully managed, serverless distributed SQL database from PingCAP. It runs transactional and analytical workloads (HTAP) on one platform, distributing data across TiKV nodes so applications need no shard keys, and it speaks the MySQL protocol with distributed ACID transactions and online DDL. Vector embeddings sit alongside relational records for ANN search and RAG retrieval.

Best for
Teams wanting a managed MySQL-compatible SQL database for mixed transactional, analytical and vector work
Pricing
No figures are published in the captured text; it states a free allowance of 25GiB storage and 250 million reads, then pay only for usage beyond that.

Strengths and trade-offs

Strengths

  • MySQL-compatible: existing drivers and ORMs work unchanged
  • Vectors and relational rows queried together in standard SQL
  • Free allowance of 25GiB storage and 250 million reads
  • Auto-scaling with no shard keys or routing logic in the app

Trade-offs

  • No prices shown for usage beyond the free allowance
  • Pay-per-use billing makes ongoing costs harder to predict
  • MySQL-compatible, not MySQL: some apps may still need changes
  • Customer quotes position it at early-stage and experimental workloads
