Overview

Temporal is a durable execution platform for orchestrating workflows, AI apps and agents. You write business logic as Workflows and Activities using native SDKs for Python, Go, TypeScript, Java, Ruby, C# and PHP; the Temporal Service persists workflow state, retries failed steps and picks up where execution left off. Run it self-hosted under the MIT licence or as managed Temporal Cloud.

Best for
Engineering teams running long workflows, pipelines or AI agents that must survive crashes and retries
Pricing
Self-hosting is free and open source; Temporal Cloud is pay-as-you-go from $100/month (Essentials) or $500/month (Business), with Enterprise and Mission Critical by contact sales.
Runs on
Self-hosted

Strengths and trade-offs

Strengths

  • MIT-licensed open source; self-host or use managed Temporal Cloud
  • SDKs for Python, Go, TypeScript, Java, Ruby, C# and PHP
  • Workflow state is persisted, so runs resume after failures
  • Cloud plans carry a 99.9% SLA with multi-region options

Trade-offs

  • Cloud bills the greater of the plan fee or 5-10% of usage
  • SAML SSO only from the $500/mo Business plan up; SCIM is an add-on there
  • Essentials P0 support is 1 business day; 30-minute P0 needs Enterprise
  • Self-hosting comes with community support only
