Overview

MobaXterm packages remote-access tools into a single portable Windows executable. It combines a tabbed SSH terminal based on PuTTY, an X.org-based X server with X11 forwarding and OpenGL, clients for RDP, VNC, telnet, rsh, SFTP, XDMCP and Mosh, and basic Cygwin commands such as bash, grep, awk, sed and rsync. Opening an SSH session also opens a graphical SFTP browser.

Best for
Windows users needing SSH, RDP, VNC and an X server for remote Unix work in one application.
Pricing
Home Edition is free to download and Professional Edition is paid, but the captured text shows no prices.

Strengths and trade-offs

Strengths

  • Single portable exe; no admin rights or extra libraries needed
  • Embedded X.org X server displays remote apps on the Windows desktop
  • SSH, RDP, VNC, telnet, SFTP, XDMCP and Mosh in one session manager
  • SSH sessions auto-open a graphical SFTP browser for editing files

Trade-offs

  • Windows only; no macOS or Linux client is mentioned
  • Use inside a company points to the paid Professional Edition
  • Only basic Cygwin commands, not a full Unix environment
  • More features and the Customizer are held back for Professional
