Overview

Kubernetes (K8s) is an open source system for automating deployment, scaling and management of containerised applications. It groups containers into logical units, gives Pods IP addresses and a shared DNS name, mounts storage and places containers by resource requirements. It restarts crashed containers and rolls back changes that fail health checks.

Best for
Teams running containerised applications across on-premises, hybrid or public cloud infrastructure
Pricing
No prices are shown; the pages describe Kubernetes as open source and point to a download section.
Runs on
Self-hosted

Strengths and trade-offs

Strengths

  • Automated rollouts with health monitoring and automatic rollback
  • Self-healing: restarts crashed containers, replaces failed Pods
  • Open source; runs on-premises, hybrid or public cloud
  • Horizontal and vertical scaling plus automatic bin packing

Trade-offs

  • A case study notes teams needed to learn Kubernetes better to use it fully
  • You run and operate it yourself; the site only offers a download
  • Some deployment capability comes from an outside ecosystem, not the core
  • No support, pricing or hosted-service information is published
