Overview
Jekyll is a static site generator: Markdown, Liquid, HTML and CSS go in, and a static site comes out ready for deployment, with no database or updates to install. It is installed as a Ruby gem and driven from the command line, where 'jekyll new' scaffolds a site and 'jekyll serve' builds and serves it locally. Sites can be hosted free on GitHub Pages, which is itself powered by Jekyll.
- Best for
- Developers comfortable with Markdown and the command line who want a static blog or site.
- Pricing
- No prices are shown; the project is maintained by volunteers and funded by sponsors, and GitHub Pages hosting is described as free.
