Overview
Docker is a platform for building, sharing and running container applications. Docker Desktop bundles the engine, CLI, Compose, Build and Kubernetes locally, Docker Hub stores images, and Docker Scout reports vulnerabilities and health scores. Newer additions target agent workloads: Sandboxes for microVM isolation, Hardened Images, and an AI Governance console for policy and audit logs.
- Best for
- Developer teams that build, share and run container applications and need admin and security controls
- Pricing
- Free Personal tier, then $9, $15 and $24 per user/month billed annually for Pro, Team and Business (monthly billing is $11 for Pro and $16 for Team).
- Runs on
- WebmacOSWindowsLinuxSelf-hostedCLI
Strengths and trade-offs
Strengths
- Free Personal tier includes Desktop, Engine, Hub, Scout and Debug
- Built on open standards; OCI-compliant and platform-independent
- Paid tiers add SSO, SCIM, audit logs and role-based access
- Build Cloud and Testcontainers Cloud minutes bundled with paid plans
Trade-offs
- Priced per user per month, so cost rises with team size
- Free tier caps Docker Hub at 100 pulls/hr and one private repo
- SSO, SCIM and Hardened Docker Desktop only on the $24 Business tier
- Included build and Testcontainers minutes expire at the end of the period
